Why does God test people? In this video, we trace the repeated theme of testing in the Bible and see how God determines the loyalty and trust of his covenant partners. Though these tests are rarely easy, they offer God’s people essential opportunities for growth and transformation.
In Genesis 22, we read about God testing Abraham’s faith by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac. Abraham obediently sets out on the journey, but as he raises the knife to slay Isaac, an angel of the Lord intervenes and stops him, revealing that this is only a test. Abraham passes the test, demonstrating his complete trust and faith in God. As a reward, God blesses Abraham and reaffirms his covenant with him, promising that Abraham’s descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky through Isaac.
In Genesis 23, we read about the death of Abraham’s wife, Sarah. After a long and fulfilling life together, Sarah passes away at the age of 127. Abraham is devastated by her loss, but he knows that he must take care of the practicalities of her burial. He approaches the Hittites, who own the land where he is living, and asks if he can purchase a plot of land to bury Sarah. The Hittites are willing to sell the ground, but Abraham insists on paying the full price. He buries Sarah in the cave of Machpelah, and after her death, Abraham becomes a very wealthy man.
In Genesis 24, we read about Abraham’s servant being sent to find a wife for his son, Isaac. The servant sets out on his mission, and with the guidance of God, he finds Rebekah, a young woman from Abraham’s homeland. The servant presents Rebekah with gifts and asks her family for permission to take her back to Isaac as his wife. Rebekah agrees to go with the servant, and upon her arrival, Isaac is overjoyed and marries her.
The story of Abraham’s faith in God and willingness to obey even when it seemed impossible is a powerful example for us today. It reminds us of the importance of trusting in God’s plan and purpose, even when it looks complicated or unclear. It also teaches us the value of obedience and the blessings of following God’s will.
In addition, the story of Abraham’s dealings with the Hittites reminds us of the importance of fairness and honesty in our relationships with others. Even though he is a wealthy man, Abraham is willing to pay a fair price for the land, and this honesty is ultimately rewarded.
Finally, the story of Isaac’s marriage to Rebekah reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance in our relationships and the blessings that come from following his will. Isaac and Rebekah’s marriage is a joyful and blessed union, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking God’s will in our important decisions, such as choosing a spouse. It also reminds us of the joy and fulfillment that can come from following God’s plan for our lives.

I know God has tested me in my own life. I gave notice at my last job without knowing where I was going because I felt God calling me somewhere else. That was a big trust moment for me, and God blessed that by bringing me to Compass! How have you felt like God has tested you?
“A test from a good God is and opportunity”. The last couple of years have been challenging. In a three month period I had two major surgeries and lost my mom and dad. Last year we unexpectedly lost our son in a car accident and there have other challenges in between. Amazingly, I grew in my faith more than at any other time in my life. The reason being? God showed up to comfort me and gave me strength in so many unexpected ways. I was able to see that even though life can be tough as Jesus said it would be, His peace and power will sustain us. I am so grateful for that!!
Hey Jim, I am so sorry for the losses and pain you have experienced over the past couple of years. But seeing how God has sustained you and grown your faith in and through these times is a testament to his faithfulness. And yours. Hope you are well, sir.
