Welcome back to Next Gen Thursdays! Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s both vital and a bit puzzling for kids—prayer. Let’s demystify it and explore ways to make it a family habit.
Firstly, let’s acknowledge that prayer is potent. But for kids, it can also be confusing. They often wonder: How? Where? When? What? These questions are valid. The term “prayer” can seem daunting. So, how do we simplify it for them? Think of it as a chat with God. Kids love to talk, and framing it this way makes it less intimidating.
Now, when should a child pray? The simple answer is anytime and all the time. Yet, kids have busy lives—school, homework, friends, and so on. So, how can we make prayer a part of their routine?
Here are four daily moments to seize for family prayer:
Morning Time: Start the day with a prayer. Whether it’s together or encouraging your child to pray alone, make it a morning ritual.
Drive Time: Car rides offer a perfect chance for prayer. Whether you’re driving to school or around town, use this time wisely.
Meal Time: At dinner, ask your child what they’d like to pray for. Or simply say a prayer before eating.
Bedtime: End the day in prayer, regardless of how the day went.
At Compass Elementary, we use a fun acronym to help kids remember to pray—T.A.C.O.S.:
In conclusion, being intentional is key. Make prayer a daily family habit. And remember, make it fun! After all, who doesn’t love T.A.C.O.S.?

I love T.A.C.O.S. !!!!!!! Great idea. 🙏🙏❤️❤️👍👍
I realize “generational gaps” but I was taught to pray in a “lifestyle” method..we always thanked the Lord for our food (at mealtimes) and His gracious abundance. We also never wrntbto bed without praying and thanki g God for His goodness to us durinth the day. Prayer was simply a normal part of our daily lives. I grew up with a sense of His constant care of us. I am grateful for that “organic” presence on a daily basis. The Lord was the unseen power that guided our lives.
Amen.
